Ecuador's foreign ministry on Tuesday reaffirmed its stance to not grant safe passage for former Vice President Jorge Glas to leave the country, following a request from Mexico's government to allow Glas to go to a third country.

Tensions between Ecuador and Mexico escalated after Ecuadorian authorities forcefully entered Mexico's embassy in April to arrest Glas, who had been granted asylum by Mexico. In response, Mexico severed diplomatic relations with Ecuador.

The move by Ecuador to deny safe passage continues to affect the strained relations between the two nations.
