Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh was assassinated early Wednesday in Iran following the inauguration of the country's new president, both Iran and the militant group confirmed. Hamas attributes the death to an Israeli airstrike, while Iran's Revolutionary Guard is investigating the incident without yet providing details.

Israeli military officials have not commented on the assassination, consistent with their typical stance on Mossad's covert operations. Haniyeh was reportedly targeted in his Tehran residence after attending President Masoud Pezeshkian's swearing-in ceremony with other Hamas and Hezbollah officials. Hamas declared Haniyeh a martyr in a public statement to their supporters.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas condemned the killing, calling it a "cowardly act and dangerous development." The assassination has intensified political tensions, prompting strikes and protests across the West Bank. The events come at a precarious time as the U.S. pushes for a cease-fire and hostage-release agreement between Hamas and Israel.
