Polls began to close on Sunday in Venezuela's most consequential election in a quarter-century of socialist party rule. President Nicolas Maduro remains confident of victory, despite the opposition's strong support and warnings of possible irregularities.

Opposition leader Maria Corina Machado, barred from holding public office, supported Edmundo Gonzalez, a 74-year-old ex-diplomat known for his calm demeanor. Gonzalez has garnered support from some former ruling party backers, although questions about the fairness of the vote remain.

By late afternoon, about 50% of registered voters had cast their ballots in central Caracas, in line with nationwide estimates. Tensions were high as voters queued, many expressing hope for change under challenging economic conditions. The military's support for Maduro remains strong, with no signs of defection from armed forces leaders.
