In a sharp critique of the Centre's Agniveer scheme, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor argued that the program, which involves six months of training followed by 3-4 years of service, undermines the quality of training and professional opportunities for the Indian Army. Tharoor asserted that the Indian Army's professional reputation is among the highest globally and that maintaining this standard is crucial for the nation.

Emphasizing the potential financial impetus behind the scheme, Tharoor remarked, "I believe it is deeply damaging ... the only rationale for it is indeed to save money on the pension." He added that the Congress party would scrap the scheme if it comes to power. In contrast, Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted the Agnipath scheme during his address in Ladakh on Kargil Vijay Diwas, describing it as essential for keeping the Army young and fit for war.

Modi said that major reforms in the Army, including the Agnipath scheme, have been long overdue. Several BJP-ruled state chief ministers echoed support for the scheme. Rajasthan CM Bhajanlal Sharma, Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma, Odisha CM Mohan Charan Majhi, Madhya Pradesh CM Mohan Yadav, and Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath announced various reservations and incentives for Agniveers in their states post-service.
