Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has been called to testify as a witness in an investigation concerning allegations of corruption and influence peddling involving his wife, Begona Gomez. The court announced that Sanchez's testimony is scheduled for July 30 at the Moncloa Palace. The investigation centers on accusations that Gomez used her status to secure sponsorships for a university master's degree course she led.

Judge Juan Carlos Peinado stated that Sanchez's testimony would be "convenient, useful, and relevant" to determine if there was any influence peddling. Gomez appeared before the judge previously but did not answer questions. Although she has not commented publicly, Sanchez has called the accusations baseless and politically motivated.

This marks a significant moment, as it is the first instance since 2017 that a sitting Spanish Prime Minister has been summoned to testify in a judicial case. The last was Mariano Rajoy, who was a witness in a graft case against members of his People's Party.
