Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Anurag Thakur on Sunday launched a scathing attack on the Congress party, accusing it of eroding the essence of the Indian Constitution through frequent amendments. Speaking to ANI, Thakur said, 'The Congress has amended the Constitution from time to time and imposed an emergency in India, during which opposition leaders were jailed, media persons were detained, and the common man's rights were suppressed. This was the darkest period of Independent India. Emergency was imposed by Indira Gandhi. From Nehru ji to Indira Gandhi ji and then Manmohan ji's regime, more than 80 amendments were made to the Constitution. The Congress party destroyed the essence of the Constitution itself.'
Thakur also took a swipe at Rahul Gandhi, alleging that despite publicly brandishing the Constitution, he couldn't answer basic questions about it. 'In a remarkable display of irony, the Congress party, historically criticised for undermining the Indian Constitution, now sees Rahul Gandhi waving a copy of the Constitution both inside Parliament and at public meetings. What is hilarious is that Rahul Gandhi has not read the foreword and the preface of the Constitution. Had he read it, he would have answered when I asked- How many pages does the original Constitution have? He or his members could not reply to that. He would have known what EBC has written here, how the generations of the Gandhi dynasty have been exposed for their systematic assault on the same Constitution,' Thakur told ANI.
Thakur further accused the Congress party of imposing 'the dark chapter of emergency' on the country and urged them to abandon hypocrisy and issue an apology to the nation. 'Rahul Gandhi and his Congress party are showing more love for the Constitution. The truth will not change by showing a copy of the Constitution and taking false oaths on it. If anyone has insulted the Constitution, then it is the Congress and the Gandhi family. Has Rahul Gandhi even read the Preamble of the Constitution? It describes the black deeds and anti-constitutional acts of the Congress government. Just waving the copy of the Constitution will not work, it will have to be read as well. The black chapter of Emergency was imposed on the country by the Congress. You should give up hypocrisy and apologize to the country,' he concluded. (ANI)
