President Joe Biden's top campaign staffer insisted on Friday that he would stay in the race, even as pressure mounts from fellow Democrats in Congress for him to end his reelection bid and make way for a new candidate.

More than one in ten congressional Democrats have now called for the 81-year-old incumbent — who is isolating due to a COVID case — to drop out following a poor debate performance against Republican Donald Trump. This internal Democratic conflict stands in sharp contrast to the unified front presented at the Republican National Convention, where Trump secured the GOP nomination.

So far, 28 of the 264 Democrats in Congress have openly urged Biden to exit the race, with other senior figures reportedly pushing for the same in private discussions. Representatives Jared Huffman, Marc Veasey, Chuy Garcia, and Marc Pocan addressed the matter in a letter, emphasizing that public concerns about Biden's age and fitness are jeopardizing his campaign.

Senator Martin Heinrich expressed similar sentiments on social media, asserting that Biden stepping aside might be in the best interest of the country. Concerns are growing among Democrats about a possible Republican sweep in the upcoming election that could see Trump and his allies taking control of both the White House and Congress.

Biden remained out of public view on Friday, but his top adviser assured that he would resume campaigning next week. Despite persistent calls for him to step down, sources indicate that Biden is beginning to seriously consider the possibility of withdrawal.

Polls suggest a tight race between Biden and Trump, but Biden's path to victory appears increasingly tenuous as he trails in pivotal battleground states. If Biden were to withdraw, Vice President Kamala Harris might step in, polling slightly better against Trump in hypothetical matchups.

Meanwhile, Republican confidence is bolstered by the cohesion displayed at their convention and Trump's forceful rhetoric. Trump asserted his readiness to preside over the whole nation while also targeting familiar grievances and conspiracy theories against Biden. Trump is scheduled to campaign in Michigan, crucial for either campaign's success in the Rust Belt.
