Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Nirupam on Tuesday criticized Shankaracharya Swami Avimukteshwaranand Saraswati, suggesting he should refrain from commenting on politics and focus on religion and spirituality. Nirupam's remarks came after the Shankaracharya met Uddhav Thackeray, describing the Shiv Sena (UBT) chief as a victim of betrayal.

"I want to tell the Shankaracharya that you speak on religion and spirituality, and guide us. You are our religious guru. But do not speak on politics. It is not his arena," Nirupam told reporters.

The Shankaracharya had turned down an invitation to the Ram temple consecration ceremony in Ayodhya earlier this year. In response to the Shankaracharya's comments, Nirupam said Thackeray's alliance with the Congress and NCP after breaking ties with BJP was the real betrayal.
