Trump Rules Out Rubio and Burgum as VP Picks, Vance Now Front-Runner
Senator Marco Rubio and Governor Doug Burgum will not be Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump's running mates, according to sources. This decision leaves Senator J.D. Vance as the main contender for the position. Rubio's residency in Florida and Burgum's conservative stance on abortion influenced the decision.
U.S. Senator Marco Rubio of Florida and North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum have both been told they will not be Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump's running mate, sources told Reuters on Monday.
This decision leaves Ohio U.S. Senator J.D. Vance as the leading contender for the job.
Advisers to Trump had viewed Rubio's residency in Florida as a drawback due to constitutional restrictions and the potential media distraction required for Rubio to move out of state. Although Rubio's Latino heritage could have potentially expanded Trump's base, concerns about these issues ultimately prevailed.
Governor Burgum's low national profile and strict anti-abortion stance also influenced the decision. His business acumen and conservative values were considered assets, but not enough to secure the position.
As of Monday midday, while Vance remains the favorite, advisers still haven't ruled out the possibility of a dark horse contender.
