Senior Congress leader and Rajya Sabha MP P. Chidambaram has called the Emergency a 'mistake,' acknowledging that it was accepted as such by then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. His remarks come as the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) announced June 25 as 'Samvidhan Hatya Diwas' to mark the 50th anniversary of the Emergency.
In an exclusive interview with ANI, Chidambaram questioned the BJP's focus on historical events, noting, '75 percent of Indians living today were born after 1975. Emergency was a mistake and it was accepted by Indira Gandhi. We have amended the Constitution so that an emergency cannot be imposed so easily.'
Critics argue that the NDA's move to commemorate 'Samvidhan Hatya Diwas' is a political strategy to divert attention from current issues. Trinamool Congress leader Kunal Ghosh emphasized that the BJP is attempting to distract from 'anti-people policies' and current national problems by revisiting historical controversies.
