French President Emmanuel Macron on Wednesday urged mainstream parties to unite and form a stable majority in the National Assembly, marking his first public address since Sunday's snap election led to parliamentary deadlock. The unexpected results have plunged France into uncharted political territory, with three divergent blocs and no clear path to government formation.

Macron, in a letter to regional newspapers, called for a coalition of parties adhering to 'republican values' and expressed hope to appoint a prime minister from this collective. 'Let us place our hope in the ability of our political leaders to demonstrate sense, harmony, and calm in the interest of the country,' he wrote.

The election saw the New Popular Front, an alliance of hard-left parties, win the most seats but not a majority. Macron's centrist party came second, with the far-right National Rally in third. Despite the customary protocol of allowing the largest group to form the government, Macron's reference to 'republican values' seemingly excludes both the far-left and far-right parties.
