National Conference leaders Farooq Abdullah and Omar Abdullah on Saturday expressed their deep sorrow over the tragic loss of five army personnel in a flash flood in Ladakh. The incident occurred when a T-72 tank, along with its crew, drowned in the Shyok River near the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in the Nyoma-Chushul area during a military exercise.
''JKNC President Farooq Abdullah and Vice President Omar Abdullah have conveyed their profound sadness over this heartbreaking loss. Their thoughts and deepest condolences are with the families of the deceased soldiers during this immensely difficult time,'' the party communicated on 'X'.
According to military officials, the soldiers were attempting to maneuver the tank across the river when the disaster struck. ''On the night of June 28, 2024, as part of a deinduction from a training exercise, an army tank got trapped in the Shyok River near Saser Brangsa due to a sudden surge in water levels,'' stated the Leh-based Fire and Fury Corps of the Indian Army.
Rescue teams were deployed immediately, but the high water current and levels hampered the mission, resulting in the unfortunate deaths of the tank crew.
