In a significant development, a woman accused of drunk driving that resulted in the death of two men has surrendered to Nagpur police over four months after the tragic incident.
Ritika alias Ritu Maloo walked into the city police station on Monday, where she was formally arrested following a round of questioning, officials have confirmed.
Late last month, the Nagpur bench of the Bombay High Court refused Maloo's plea for pre-arrest bail, stating that driving under the influence of alcohol constitutes serious misconduct and should not be taken lightly.
The incident in question took place on February 25 on Nagpur's Ram Jhula bridge. Maloo, allegedly under the influence, drove her Mercedes recklessly into two men riding a scooter, resulting in fatal injuries to both Mohammad Hussain Gulam Mustafa and Mohammad Ateef Mohammad Zia.
Initially, Maloo was booked under several sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Motor Vehicles Act for rash and negligent driving. However, following public outcry and due to the severity of the accident, additional charges including culpable homicide were added.
Although Maloo was initially granted bail, police sought her re-arrest, prompting her to apply for pre-arrest bail, which was subsequently denied by the court. She will be presented before a local court on Tuesday, the police stated.
