Days after Prime Minister Narendra Modi assured the public of imminent assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) held a pivotal meeting in Jammu on Saturday to draft their action plan for the democratic exercise.

Chaired by PDP vice-president Abdul Hameed Choudhary at the Gandhi Nagar headquarters, the meeting aimed to energize and fortify the party's cadre in the Jammu region ahead of the anticipated elections, party spokesperson Variender Singh Sonu revealed to PTI.

Present at the meeting were key PDP figures including general secretary Amrik Singh Reen, additional general secretary Satpal Singh Charak, Jammu women's wing president Surjit Kaur, district president Jammu Sohit Sharma, and senior leaders Vijaya Dogra, Choudhary Chuni Lal, and K K Sharma.

The detailed discussions revolved around the party's preparation for the upcoming assembly elections and strategies to reinforce the party's base at the grassroots across the Jammu region, according to the spokesperson.

The Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir is currently administered by a Lt Governor-led administration since the collapse of the PDP-BJP coalition government in June 2018, following the BJP's withdrawal. The last assembly elections were conducted in 2014.

On his visit to the valley on June 20-21 after starting his third term, PM Modi pledged that assembly elections would soon take place in Jammu and Kashmir, and initiatives are underway to restore statehood to the Union Territory. During his speech at SKICC 'Empowering Youth, Transforming J&K', he praised the significant voter turnout in the Lok Sabha elections and underscored the necessity for local leaders to be elected through the forthcoming assembly election.

Modi stated, ''The people of Jammu and Kashmir participated in Lok Sabha elections in large numbers and broke a 35-year record. You deserve to be praised for it... Now, the time has come for the people of Jammu and Kashmir to elect their own representatives. Preparations are underway for holding assembly elections.''
