According to a report released by Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre, Ethiopia continues to maintain its position in leading the world for having the highest number of conflict-related internally displace people.
The East African country holds the record for having the most internally displaced persons in the world. Ethiopia is currently having 2.9 million internally displaced persons due to conflicts and violence, higher than in Syria and Somalia.
Unresolved conflicts and a rise in communal violence were responsible for most of the 10.8 million new displacements associated with conflict and violence in 2018. Ethiopia, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Syria accounted for more than half of the global figure, Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre’s report stated.
“Ethiopia had the highest figure, with 2.9 million new displacements, a considerable increase that influenced global trends,” a part of the report stated. “The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Syria, Somalia, Central African Republic (CAR) and Afghanistan were again among the countries with the highest number of new displacements associated with conflict.” “New waves of conflict and violence triggered displacement in Nigeria and Cameroon, that were among the ten worst-affected countries globally,” the report stated.
The Philippines, China and India between them accounted for around 60 percent of all new displacements, mostly in the form of evacuations.”
