Russia Reclaims Key Territory in Kursk Region

Russia declared on Tuesday that it has retaken more than 100 square kilometres of land and 12 settlements in the Kursk region of western Russia. This move is part of a broader effort to expel Ukrainian forces from the area.

The Russian defense ministry detailed that units from the North group of forces liberated these regions in a recent offensive. Ukrainian troops had previously captured approximately 1,300 square kilometres of the Kursk area in August, which Kyiv described as a strategic move to negotiate leverage and to cause Russia to reallocate its forces away from eastern Ukraine.

This represents the most significant attack on Russian land since the 1941 Nazi invasion of the Soviet Union. By mid-February, Russia had reportedly reclaimed at least 800 square kilometres of the region. The latest military actions involve a substantial paratrooper offensive aimed at severing Ukraine's supply lines. Reuters has not been able to independently verify these battlefield developments.
