Spain's Defense Boost: Balancing Security and Social Spending
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez announced plans for a defense sector boost by summer. Promising no cuts to social or environmental spending, he aims to align Spain's defense contributions with NATO goals amidst geopolitical challenges and domestic opposition.

Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez announced on Wednesday that the Spanish government will unveil and commence a new defense sector enhancement plan by summer. This initiative aims to strengthen Spain's role in the European security landscape through technological and industrial advancement.
During his address on current geopolitical challenges, Sanchez assured that any increase in defense investments would not undermine financial commitments to social and environmental policies. Spain, currently lagging in NATO defense spending, plans to increase its defense budget from 1.3% of GDP, complying with NATO's target ahead of the 2029 deadline.
Sanchez faces criticism domestically, particularly from leftist allies wary of cutting social programs for defense expansion. He emphasizes the unique security needs of southern European countries, which include combating terrorism, managing borders, and cybersecurity threats.
