High Seas Predicament: Activist Paul Watson's Dilemma
Paul Watson, anti-whaling activist and founder of the Sea Shepherd group, is detained in Greenland as Denmark considers extraditing him to Japan. He faces charges from over a decade ago and could serve up to 15 years if convicted. His legal team has filed an appeal against the detention.
Anti-whaling activist Paul Watson continues to be detained in Greenland as Denmark deliberates his potential extradition to Japan, Greenlandic authorities announced on Wednesday.
The 73-year-old founder of Sea Shepherd was arrested when his vessel docked in Nuuk on July 21. Greenlandic police confirmed his incarceration would last until December 4, pending further legal action.
Watson's attorney, Julie Stage, expressed dissent but acknowledged the predictable verdict. Legal challenges are underway, hoping Denmark's Supreme Court will offer a different outcome. Watson could face significant jail time in Japan if the extradition proceeds.
