North Korea has formalized a defense treaty with Russia, pledged in June, which obligates each nation to support the other against armed aggression. This move, reported by state media KCNA, has faced international scrutiny, given the rising military rapport between the two countries. Officials have noted North Korea's deployment of thousands of soldiers to Russia, reportedly aiding in its conflict with Ukraine.
On Monday, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un decreed the ratification of the pact, pending the exchange of ratification instruments between the nations. Russian President Vladimir Putin has also enacted the treaty, requiring immediate military and other support if either party enters a state of war.
The treaty, initially agreed upon at a summit between Kim and Putin in June, is aimed at raising bilateral relations to an 'alliance' status. Reports claim more than 10,000 North Korean soldiers are in Russia, with some allegedly engaged in combat near the Ukraine border. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy recently acknowledged North Korean casualties, highlighting the conflict's global ramifications.
