President Tayyip Erdogan announced on Tuesday Turkey's ambitions to establish its own 'Steel Dome' air defense system. This initiative aims to boost Turkey's long-range missile capabilities and marks an effort to reduce dependency on foreign defense suppliers.
During a ceremony in Ankara for the launch of the Gokbey helicopter designed for the gendarmerie, Erdogan compared the 'Steel Dome' to Israel's 'Iron Dome.' Highlighting the importance of multi-layered defense systems, Erdogan emphasized Turkey's commitment to achieve defense independence.
Erdogan's announcement comes in the wake of U.S. sanctions imposed on Turkey in December 2020 for acquiring Russia's S-400 missile defense system. Turkey was also removed from the F-35 stealth fighter jet program, both as a buyer and manufacturer.
