Sanjay Raut, a prominent figure in Shiv Sena (UBT), has initiated an appeal in a sessions court against his recent defamation conviction. The case stems from allegations made by Medha Somaiya, wife of BJP leader Kirit Somaiya, claiming that Raut falsely accused her of being implicated in a financial scam.
Raut was convicted in September under the Indian Penal Code section 500 and handed a 15-day jail sentence along with a fine. Despite the sentence, Raut secured a suspended order, allowing him 30 days to challenge the verdict in a higher court. However, Raut's absence at the scheduled hearing led to a delay in proceedings.
Medha Somaiya maintains that Raut's statements have tarnished her reputation, and the court has highlighted Raut's responsibility as an MP to exercise caution in his public remarks. The sessions court is set to reconvene and deliberate further on the appeal.
