Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science and Technology, Dr Jitendra Singh, stressed the need for the optimal use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to enhance government efficiency and productivity during a special session for the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) staff. The session was held as part of the ongoing "National Learning Week" under Mission Karmayogi, aimed at improving the skills and knowledge of government officials.

Dr. Singh highlighted AI’s transformative potential in governance, urging its use to automate routine tasks, enabling officials to focus on more strategic and critical issues. He emphasized AI’s impact on sectors like healthcare, agriculture, and public service delivery, leading to more responsive and citizen-centric governance. The event, attended by key officials such as Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister Mr. P.K. Mishra and advisors like Mr. Amit Khare and Mr. Tarun Kapoor, was unique in its inclusive structure, bringing together PMO officials across all hierarchical levels.

AI in Governance and National GrowthDuring the session, Dr. Singh explained how AI could streamline operations across various government departments, improving decision-making processes and transforming the way public services are delivered. He mentioned that AI’s role in building smart physical and digital infrastructure is crucial for India’s long-term growth, impacting national security, economic development, and public service efficiency.

Participants also discussed AI's potential in advancing India’s industrial sector, particularly in healthcare and manufacturing, underscoring its capacity to drive economic transformation and create employment opportunities. The session also highlighted AI's role in reshaping India's digital infrastructure, positioning the country as a global leader in AI-driven solutions.

Call for India's First AI Data Bank and AI for Sustainable Growth

One of the key outcomes of the session was the announcement of India’s first practical AI data bank, a significant initiative aimed at accelerating AI development over the next decade. The data bank will act as a repository of AI knowledge and applications, helping India harness AI for innovation, governance, and sustainable growth.

Dr. Singh emphasized that AI must be deployed responsibly, with strong safeguards to protect data privacy and national security. He also highlighted the ethical considerations of AI, ensuring that it is used fairly and without bias in government decision-making. The development of AI frameworks for security and infrastructure was identified as a priority, with participants acknowledging the need for innovation in front-end technologies to maintain India’s competitiveness on the global stage.

Vision for 2035 and Beyond: AI as a Tool for Citizen Empowerment

Looking towards the future, the session also touched upon AI’s role in shaping India’s geopolitical strategy, with a focus on how AI technologies are influencing global power dynamics. Dr. Singh and other participants discussed the need for a strategic AI framework to navigate these challenges, positioning India as a leader in AI-driven geopolitical and economic growth.

The event concluded with a vision for India by 2035, extending to 2047, focusing on citizen empowerment through AI. Dr. Singh outlined the government's commitment to creating an inclusive AI ecosystem that transforms governance and ensures equitable development across all sectors of society.

Mission Karmayogi and Continued Learning

As part of Mission Karmayogi’s goal to create a more agile and transparent bureaucracy, Dr. Singh encouraged all government officials to take full advantage of learning opportunities, ensuring they are equipped with the skills necessary for modern governance. National Learning Week will continue to focus on AI, with government departments dedicating time to learning and implementing AI-driven solutions. Dr. Singh reiterated the government’s commitment to responsibly integrating AI into governance to enhance efficiency, transparency, and inclusivity, setting the stage for a tech-driven, citizen-centric future.
