The Supreme Court has taken a decisive step in resolving the ongoing dispute between the AAP-led Delhi government and the Lieutenant Governor's office by extending the tenure of Justice Jayant Nath as the interim chairperson of the Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission (DERC).
Justice Nath, a former Delhi High Court judge, was initially appointed on August 4, 2023, by the court itself to manage the deadlock. With the retirement age set at 65, the court has now allowed Nath to continue beyond this threshold, acknowledging his expertise in DERC affairs, following the consent from both the Delhi government and the Lieutenant Governor.
The appointment had been a significant point of contention, with legal challenges highlighting the need for the LG to act on the Delhi Cabinet's advice. The apex court's involvement underscores the necessity for focused governance away from political disputes.
