Russia is pushing for significant changes in the UN Security Council's structure, suggesting countries like India, Brazil, and African nations gain permanent seats. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov emphasized this would ensure greater representativeness of the global majority, according to state-owned agency TASS.
India has long sought reform in the Security Council, arguing that the current 15-member system, established in 1945, no longer serves its purpose and fails to reflect current geopolitical realities. India's claim for a permanent seat is rooted in its increased global influence, making it a pivotal candidate.
The movement for reform has gained international backing. Notably, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has joined US President Joe Biden and French President Emmanuel Macron in voicing support for India's bid for a permanent UNSC seat. This momentum stresses the need for a restructured council reflective of today's world dynamics.
