Unopposed Victories in Punjab's Panchayat Elections

In a significant development, nearly 3,800 candidates have secured unopposed victories as 'sarpanch' in Punjab ahead of the upcoming elections, as reported by the State Election Commission on Wednesday.
Scheduled for October 15, the elections will decide the leadership for 13,229 gram panchayats. A parallel election process has seen 48,861 'panch' positions being filled without opposition.
According to a commission spokesperson, a total of 20,147 nominations for 'sarpanch' and 31,381 for 'panch' were withdrawn, leaving 25,588 and 80,598 candidates contesting for each post, respectively.
