A 27-year-old man in Mumbai has been criminally charged for allegedly giving his wife 'triple talaq', an instant form of divorce prohibited in 2019, as a result of not receiving money from her parents, authorities reported this Wednesday.

The situation unfolded on Monday when the 22-year-old spouse lodged a complaint against her husband, his parents, and younger brother at the JJ Marg police station. The woman claims she married the man, a scrap dealer, in 2020, against her family's wishes and subsequently severed all communication with them, moving in with her husband's family in Mumbai's Pydhonie area. The couple shares two children.

According to her statement, her in-laws pressured her to secure a job, resulting in her employment as a teacher, all the while insisting on receiving financial aid from her parents. Following her refusal to acquiesce to these financial demands, she endured harassment and physical abuse, culminating in her husband pronouncing 'triple talaq' on September 24. An official investigation is currently underway under the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Act and related laws.
