The Kerala Assembly, on its opening day of a nine-day session, somberly honored the victims of the catastrophic landslides in Meppadi, Wayanad district, which claimed over 230 lives. Speaker A N Shamseer expressed the assembly's deep sorrow, and Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan referred to the event as an 'unparalleled catastrophe.'

Highlighting scientific findings, Vijayan mentioned that debris flowed at 100 kilometers per hour, with extreme rainfall induced by climate change being a significant cause. He announced the establishment of a Climate Change Adaptation Mission to minimize future impacts.

Leader of the Opposition, V D Satheesan, criticized the lack of central government aid and pledged full support from the opposition for rehabilitation. The assembly reiterated that Kerala is increasingly prone to natural disasters due to global warming.
