A court in Uttar Pradesh has sentenced Omdutt to life imprisonment for the brutal murders of his wife and two daughters 13 years ago, police reported on Tuesday. The Additional District Sessions Judge-5, Chandra Mohan Srivastava, also imposed a fine of Rs 55,000 on Omdutt.

Omdutt's parents and two brothers were also found guilty for their roles in the murders and received two-year sentences along with a fine of Rs 2,500 each. The tragic incident was rooted in dowry harassment that began shortly after Omdutt married Bhumika in 2004. The couple had two daughters and a son.

Bhumika was lured to a hospital under the pretense of an emergency involving Omdutt. Instead, she and her daughters were intercepted and killed by Omdutt near the Harnauti Canal, where he later desecrated their bodies with acid. Nine witnesses testified against him, leading to his life sentence. Failure to pay the fine could add an additional 10 months to his imprisonment.
