Senior Hezbollah Commander Killed in Israeli Airstrike Amid Intensified Conflict

An Israeli airstrike on Beirut on Tuesday killed a senior Hezbollah commander, Ibrahim Qubaisi, heightening fears of a full-scale war in the Middle East. Cross-border rocket attacks have increased, and Lebanon said only Washington could help end the conflict.

Israel's offensive has resulted in 569 deaths, including 50 children, and 1,835 injuries in Lebanon, according to Health Minister Firass Abiad. The offensive has stoked fears of escalating conflict between Israel and militant groups Hamas and Hezbollah. Britain urged its citizens to leave Lebanon and deployed 700 troops to Cyprus for evacuation assistance.

The U.N. Security Council will meet on Wednesday to discuss the crisis. U.S. President Joe Biden called for calm, though Lebanon's Foreign Minister Abdallah Bou Habib criticized his address as insufficient. Washington, Israel's primary ally, remains a key player in resolving the conflict. Meanwhile, the humanitarian situation continues to worsen, with thousands displaced and seeking shelter in Beirut.
