Supreme Court Approves Execution of Death Row Inmate Marcellus Williams

The Supreme Court on Tuesday allowed Missouri to proceed with its plan to execute death row inmate Marcellus Williams, rejecting a last-ditch request to intervene on his behalf.

The justices turned down two separate appeals to spare Williams' life, despite objections from the three liberal justices. Williams' lethal injection is set for Tuesday evening.

This decision follows a day after both the Missouri Supreme Court and Republican Governor Mike Parson declined to intervene for Williams.

Williams, who has maintained his innocence in the 1998 killing of social worker Lisha Gayle, faced opposition from the victim's family and the prosecutor's office. Nevertheless, Missouri's Republican attorney general advocated for the execution to proceed.
