Police in the national capital have arrested a 21-year-old man for allegedly smuggling firecrackers, officials reported on Sunday.
During a night patrol in Nihal Vihar on Saturday, officers observed a black Scorpio car near a coal vending stall heading towards Sunday Bazar. Finding the vehicle suspicious, they signalled it to stop and discovered four plastic bags on the rear and middle seats, Deputy Commissioner of Police (outer) Jimmy Chiram stated.
Although one suspect was apprehended, two others managed to flee. Further inspection revealed 65 kg of firecrackers, which were seized. The arrested individual, identified as Rohit, confessed to sourcing the firecrackers from Ghaziabad. Authorities have set up teams to capture the remaining suspects. The Delhi government recently imposed a ban on firecrackers to combat air pollution during the winter season, in effect until January 1, 2025.
