Lopez, a member of the Municipal Committee for the Defense of Common and Public Goods, was shot dead by several men as he was returning from church.
Addressing the news, the Pope said he stood with those who fight for the common good and condemned all forms of violence. In recent speeches, the pontiff has emphasized the need for stronger environmental protection.
