A 28-year-old man from Maharashtra's Latur district was sentenced to 12 years of rigorous imprisonment on Friday for raping a 13-year-old girl.

Identified as Anil Rohidas Acharya, the resident of Kopra village in Ahmedpur tehsil, was accused of sexually abusing the minor on August 14, 2023.

Acharya faced charges under Section 376 of the Indian Penal Code and relevant provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. The charge sheet was submitted within 60 days of the incident, according to police officials.

In addition to the imprisonment, the special POCSO court at Ahmedpur imposed a fine of Rs 35,000 on Acharya.
