On Friday, Deputy President Paul Mashatile delivered a poignant keynote address at the inaugural Ronnie Mamoepa Annual Lecture held at Tshwane University of Technology's Pretoria campus. The event, hosted by the Ronnie Mamoepa Foundation, honored the late Mamoepa, an esteemed struggle hero and influential figure in government communication.

Mashatile called on citizens to recommit to the values of compassion, justice, and unity, echoing the sentiments of President Oliver Tambo and the vision outlined in the Freedom Charter. He emphasized the importance of constructing a future where everyone has the opportunity to prosper and where principles of equality and dignity are upheld.

Mamoepa, who passed away in July 2017, was remembered for his dedication to freedom, democracy, and public service. His work as the spokesperson for then-Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa and his contributions to shaping the democratic narrative in South Africa were highlighted.

In his address, Mashatile praised Mamoepa as a revolutionary intellectual who was deeply committed to creating a non-racial, non-sexist, and democratic society. He recalled Mamoepa's resilience and dedication, particularly after his release from Robben Island, and noted his influence on former student leaders who are now part of his team in the Presidency.

Mashatile expressed confidence that Mamoepa would have supported the Government of National Unity (GNU), which is focused on inclusive growth, job creation, poverty reduction, and building a capable and ethical State. He assured citizens that the GNU is working diligently to address challenges and build a better South Africa.

The Deputy President emphasized the need for collective effort and understanding in the face of current challenges. He concluded with a call to uphold Mamoepa's legacy and continue striving for a society where every voice is heard and every citizen empowered.

The ceremony was attended by various dignitaries, including those who had worked closely with Mamoepa, and served as a powerful reminder of his enduring impact on South Africa's democratic journey.
