West Bengal Police have intensified their investigation into the killing of a pregnant elephant in Jhargram by adding Section 27(1) of the Arms Act, 1959, to the FIR. The inclusion of this non-bailable offence aims to make bail more difficult for the accused, increasing the likelihood of justice.

PETA India announced the development on Thursday, noting the Jhargram SP's confirmation of the FIR update. The two individuals arrested in connection with the case remain in jail after their bail pleas were rejected twice. PETA had previously urged the forest department to include both Section 325 of the Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, and Section 11(1) of The Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (PCA) Act, 1960, alongside an inquiry into the illegal use of arms.

Chief Wildlife Warden Debal Roy mentioned efforts to form local committees to raise awareness about the dangers of using flaming torches against elephants, while reiterating that such actions will not be tolerated. PETA continues its advocacy to end abusive treatment of animals and promote their welfare in societal policies and practices.
