Three police officers were injured while attempting to rescue three individuals accused by villagers of practicing black magic in Katihar, Bihar, a senior officer reported Wednesday.
The incident unfolded on Tuesday when police arrived in Khairiya village, within the Kodha Police Station area, to save the accused from a mob attack, according to Katihar Superintendent of Police Jitendra Kumar.
Gopal Rishi of a neighboring village had died days earlier, prompting villagers to imprison and assault the trio based on a belief they had foreseen his death. During the intervention, villagers attacked the police, injuring officers and damaging a vehicle. The injured officers have received medical attention and are out of danger, Kumar added, noting that investigations are ongoing.
