Israel-Hamas Ceasefire Deal: A Narrowing Window
Israel's Defence Minister Yoav Gallant suggests a temporary six-week cease-fire with Hamas to release hostages and calm borders. While Gallant sees this as an opportunity, he stresses it will not lead to a permanent cease-fire, expressing doubt over Hamas' commitment. Mediators continue efforts for a viable agreement.
Israel's Defence Minister, Yoav Gallant, has warned that the opportunity to secure a temporary cease-fire with Hamas is rapidly diminishing. Speaking to reporters, Gallant said conditions seem favorable for a six-week pause in fighting, aiming to facilitate the release of hostages.
However, Gallant emphasized that the cease-fire would not lead to a permanent end to the conflict, as demanded by Hamas. This raises concerns about the feasibility of such a deal. The United States, along with Egypt and Qatar, has been mediating talks for months to end the conflict.
Disputes remain over Hamas' demands for a complete withdrawal of Israeli troops from Gaza. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu insists on maintaining a strategic corridor along Gaza's Egyptian border. Gallant supports a six-week withdrawal for hostage release but remains non-committal on a permanent solution.
