A tragic helicopter crash claimed the lives of El Salvador's Police Chief Mauricio Arriaza and embezzlement suspect Manuel Coto on Sunday night, according to government reports.

The crash, which occurred in the Pasaquina district near Honduras, also resulted in the deaths of seven others, including police officers, servicemen, and a Justice Ministry employee. Arriaza was escorting Coto, who faced charges of embezzling $35 million, back to El Salvador from Honduras where he had been arrested.

Authorities have not yet disclosed the cause of the crash. President Nayib Bukele emphasized the need for a thorough investigation, commending Arriaza for his dedication to national security while acknowledging the criticisms from human rights groups regarding his methods. U.S. Ambassador William Duncan extended his condolences on behalf of the U.S. government.
