Thousands of Indians in the diaspora staged protests across more than 130 cities in 25 countries on Sunday, organizers reported. They are demanding justice following the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at a Kolkata hospital last month.

Starting in Japan, Australia, Taiwan, and Singapore, the protests quickly spread to several European cities. Sixty demonstrations were planned across the U.S., complementing ongoing protests in India after the murder of the 31-year-old chest medicine postgraduate student on August 9.

Authorities have arrested a suspect and the former principal of R.G. Kar Medical College, where the victim studied. In Stockholm, protesters gathered in Sergels Torg square, singing Bengali songs and holding signs to demand accountability and safety for Indian women.

'The news of this heinous crime committed on a young trainee doctor while on duty numbed and shocked each of us at the sheer ruthlessness, brutality, and disregard for human life,' stated Dipti Jain, a protest organizer and UK-based former alumnus of Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital. India's Supreme Court has scheduled the next hearing for Monday. Despite tougher laws post-2012 gang rape in New Delhi, activists assert that the Kolkata case highlights ongoing sexual violence against women.
