A devastating fuel tanker explosion on Sunday killed at least 48 people in north-central Nigeria, according to the state's disaster management agency.
The State Emergency Management Agency of Niger state reported that the fuel tanker collided with another truck transporting travelers and cattle, with several other vehicles also caught in the wreckage.
Hussaini Ibrahim, the agency's spokesperson, confirmed the death toll and noted ongoing efforts to clear the accident scene. This tragedy comes on the heels of a 39% price hike in gasoline by Nigeria's state-run firm NNPC Ltd, exacerbating fuel shortages nationwide.
