Bangladesh is preparing to extradite former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina from India to face charges of mass killings during the anti-government protests that led to her resignation. Chief Prosecutor Md Tajul Islam of the International Crimes Tribunal confirmed the development on Sunday.

Following severe anti-government demonstrations that peaked on August 5, Hasina stepped down and fled to India. Islam disclosed that steps would be taken under the extradition treaty with India to bring Hasina back for trial concerning the violence during the student-led movement in July and August.

Islam also mentioned that they would seek arrest warrants for all absconding accused, including Hasina, and gather evidence for prosecution. The tribunal, which will need new judges and investigators after the previous team stepped down, has already launched an investigation last month against Hasina and nine others over genocide and crimes against humanity.
