Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has firmly resolved to maintain its anti-government campaign, even as tensions escalate with the recent detention of several party leaders. This affirmation, articulated by PTI members, follows the arrest of notable figures at the Parliament House during a police operation on Monday, according to Geo News.
Addressing the press in Peshawar, PTI leader Salman Akram Raja reiterated the party's stance, "There should be no misunderstanding as people have stood up." Alongside Raja were key party members, including Omar Ayub Khan, Asad Qaiser, and Azam Swati. The leaders contended that the country's political process was being manipulated and vowed to resist any attempts to quash the public's voice.
In defense of PTI's recent rally in Islamabad, Raja highlighted the unique atmosphere of political demonstrations. The party has heavily criticized the crackdown, especially targeting Members of the National Assembly (MNA) during their public gathering. PTI condemned the September 9 arrests as a breach of democratic principles and accused the coalition government of fabricating allegations against PTI leaders.
During the press conference, journalists protested against Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur's derogatory remarks towards the media during a PTI event. Opposition Leader Omar Ayub Khan censured the coalition government's actions aimed at hindering PTI's public gatherings.
Omar Ayub Khan labeled the day of the arrests as a "black day." He sought immediate release of detained members, asserting that law enforcement actions were politically motivated. Senior PTI leader Asad Qaiser also took a robust stance, proclaiming continued street protests and legal battles, demanding fresh elections and branding the current government as illegitimate.
Qaiser suggested filing contempt of court charges against the Islamabad police's chief for obstructing the PTI rally. Earlier, the core committee at Khyber Pakhtunkhwa CM's House resolved to launch nationwide protests. Amidst these tensions, PTI chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan, detained earlier, was released after charges were dropped.
The PTI members face accusations relevant to the Peaceful Assembly and Public Order Bill, 2024, enacted for maintaining order during public gatherings. The National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq admonished the Islamabad police for the arrests and demanded their release, insisting on upholding parliamentary dignity and justice.
