In a tragic turn of events, five individuals lost their lives in fresh violence that erupted in Manipur's Jiribam district on Saturday, police said. Militants infiltrated the home of a solitary resident located about 5 km from the district headquarters and fatally shot him in his sleep.
The attack sparked a fierce exchange of gunfire between warring communities in the hills, approximately 7 km from the district headquarters, resulting in the deaths of four armed men, including three militants, police confirmed. Consequently, Chief Minister N Biren Singh hurriedly convened an emergency meeting with ruling coalition MLAs and later briefed Governor L Acharya on the situation.
This incident follows a series of violent episodes, including the destruction of militant bunkers by security forces and drone sightings that caused panic among residents. The ongoing ethnic clashes have claimed over 200 lives and displaced thousands, with authorities closely monitoring the volatile situation.
