Authorities in Assam have arrested two individuals accused of raping a minor in Dhing, Nagaon district, after the incident ignited widespread protests. The arrests occurred a fortnight after the alleged crime, according to statements from the police.
One suspect was apprehended in Dimapur, Nagaland, and the other in Assam's Morigaon district. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma publicly announced the arrests on social media, noting that the duo are now in custody at the Nagaon Sadar police station for further interrogation.
Police sources say both suspects had been on the run since the reported incident on August 22. Initially, the prime accused was detained but managed to escape during a crime scene recreation. The incident involved a 14-year-old girl who was attacked by three individuals on a motorcycle while returning home from tuition.
