President Cyril Ramaphosa has reaffirmed South Africa’s commitment to its longstanding relationship with China, assuring President Xi Jinping that the nation's foreign policies will remain consistent despite recent political changes. Addressing the media after his visit to China, Ramaphosa provided insights into the structure and vision of South Africa's new Government of National Unity (GNU).

Ramaphosa highlighted that during discussions, President Xi expressed concerns about whether the new GNU might alter South Africa's position on its policy with China, particularly its recognition of the One China policy. Ramaphosa reassured Xi that South Africa’s foreign policy towards China, developed over the past 30 years, would remain unchanged.

He emphasized that the GNU’s approach to cooperative governance, which brings together various political parties, is aimed at strengthening South Africa’s internal development. Ramaphosa explained that the inclusion of multiple political parties would not compromise the country’s commitment to its global partnerships, including its strategic relationship with China.

“We discussed our political developments, and President Xi was pleased with our path towards unity and social cohesion. Our aim is to have all parties in the GNU contribute to the advancement of South Africa, both domestically and internationally,” said Ramaphosa.

Ramaphosa further outlined the GNU’s priorities, which focus on addressing economic challenges, reducing unemployment, and promoting inclusive economic growth. He emphasized the importance of building state capacity, improving local government efficiency, and enhancing skills development to serve the broader interests of South Africans.

The President also noted that the new political framework was embraced by the people of South Africa and is seen as a transformative process. He expressed confidence that the GNU would bring positive changes, fostering collaboration across political divides for the benefit of the nation.

“This new era of cooperative governance is transformative and will bring advantages to all South Africans,” Ramaphosa concluded.
