Netherlands to Boost Defence: More F-35 Jets and Tank Battalion Revived

The Netherlands' defence ministry announced a significant plan to 'future-proof' the country's military, including procuring additional F-35 fighter jets and restoring a Dutch tank battalion, in light of escalating global threats.

Since Russia's invasion of Ukraine, NATO, including the Netherlands, has urgently reassessed its military strengt. State Secretary for Defence Gijs Tuinman called the white paper 'the most ambitious military agenda in modern Dutch history,' with an extra 2.4 billion euros per year boosting the annual defence budget to 24 billion euros.

Former Prime Minister Mark Rutte becoming NATO chief soon emphasizes the urgency. NATO spokesperson Farah Dakhlallah praised the Netherlands' initiative, underscoring its importance in the currently volatile security climate. Head of Security & Defence Programme at the Clingendael Institute, Dick Zandzee, highlighted remaining challenges like the number of army battalions.
