The Indian government has extended the ceasefire agreement with the breakaway Naga insurgency faction, NSCN (K) Niki group, by another year. The extension will be in effect from September 8, 2024, until September 7, 2025, according to an official statement released on Thursday.
This faction is led by Niki Sumi, who is wanted by the National Investigation Agency with a Rs 10 lakh bounty for allegedly killing 18 Indian Army soldiers in Manipur in 2015. The agreement was initially signed on September 6, 2021.
Meanwhile, talks with the major Naga group, NSCN-IM, have hit a stalemate due to their demands for a separate Naga flag and constitution, which the central government has rejected. The government continues separate peace negotiations with other splinter groups of the NSCN, including NSCN-NK, NSCN-R, NSCN K-Khango, and NSCN (K) Niki.
