The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has initiated an investigation into the alleged murder of 20-year-old Shankar Meena in Rajasthan's Peeplu. The case was registered against four members of the local police patrol unit and other suspects, as confirmed by officials on Thursday.
The Rajasthan High Court handed the case over to the CBI on August 14, following claims that Meena was killed by the sand mafia last year. The incident led to widespread demonstrations by locals against the leaseholder of the sand mines.
Allegations have surfaced that the four police patrol members may have been complicit in the killing, cooperating with the perpetrators, officials added.
