Ex-Principal of Kolkata Medical College Arrested for Financial Irregularities Amid Investigation into Doctor's Murder
Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of R.G. Kar Medical College in Kolkata, was arrested on charges of financial irregularities. His arrest follows investigations into the rape and murder of a female doctor at the college. The case has sparked widespread protests demanding safer workplaces for women in India.
In a major development, India's federal police have arrested Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of R.G. Kar Medical College in Kolkata, over alleged graft. The arrest follows an investigation into the brutal rape and murder of a young female doctor on the premises.
Ghosh, who stepped down from his position shortly after the incident became public, was taken into custody by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Monday, facing charges of financial irregularities. Alongside Ghosh, two hospital supply vendors and a close associate were also arrested in connection with the case.
Reuters was unable to obtain immediate comments from Ghosh or his legal representative. The murder has triggered widespread outrage and protests, particularly among doctors advocating for enhanced safety measures for women in workplaces and demanding justice for the victim. Despite tougher laws post the 2012 Delhi gang-rape case, activists argue the incident underscores the ongoing issue of sexual violence against women in India. A police volunteer, previously arrested and charged with the murder, remains in custody.
