A 30-year-old man has been arrested in Uttar Pradesh for the gruesome murder of three family members in Maharashtra's Palghar district, police disclosed on Thursday.

The horrifying crime was unearthed on August 30 when the bodies of Mukund Bechardas Rathod (75), his wife Kanchan (72), and their daughter Sangeeta (52) were discovered inside their residence at Nehroili in Wada tehsil.

Arif Anwar Ali, the 30-year-old suspect, was captured at Meja village in Uttar Pradesh during a joint effort by Palghar police and a special task force. A former neighbor of the Rathods, Ali reportedly committed the murders on August 17 in an attempt to rob the family.

According to Balasaheb Patil, district rural superintendent of police, Ali admitted to killing the victims using a hammer.

The crime came to light when the Rathod couple's son, unable to contact his parents and sister, broke into the house on August 30. He discovered his father's decomposing body near the washroom, and the bodies of his mother and sister wrapped in cloth and blankets inside a large trunk.

Ali faces charges under sections 103 (1) (murder) and 238 (causing disappearance of evidence) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The investigation is ongoing.
